¹ The memory of a just man is praised, and the Lord’s blessing is upon his head. Blessed is one who has found wisdom; a mortal who knows understanding. To import her is better than treasures of gold and silver. She is more valuable than precious stones; nothing of value equals her worth. Justice proceeds from her mouth; she bears law and mercy on her tongue. Therefore, my children, listen to me, for I speak weighty things. And blessed is the one who keeps my ways. For my goings out are the goings out of life, and favour is prepared from the Lord. Therefore I exhort you, and utter my voice to the children of humankind. Because I, Wisdom, have prepared counsel, knowledge and understanding. I have called on them. Counsel and sureness are mine; prudence is mine, strength is mine. I love those who are my friends, while those who seek me will find grace. You innocent, then, understand cunning; you untaught, take it to heart. Listen to me, for I will speak weighty things, and I will open right things from my lips. Because my throat will meditate truth; lying lips are abominable before me. All the words of my mouth are with justice, there is nothing crooked in them nor twisted. They are all straight for those who understand, and right for those who find knowledge. For I teach you what is true, that your hope may be in the Lord and that you may be filled with spirit.

¹ The mouth of a just man distils wisdom; the lips of men know graces. The mouth of the wise meditates wisdom; justice delivers them from death. When a just man dies hope is not lost; for a just son is born for life, and among his good things he will pluck the fruit of justice. There is light at all times for the just, and they will find grace and glory from the Lord. The tongue of the wise knows what is good, and wisdom will take its rest in their hearts. The Lord loves holy hearts; while all who are blameless in the way are acceptable to him. The wisdom of the Lord will enlighten the face of the understanding; for she anticipates those who desire her before they know it, and is easily contemplated by those who love her. One who rises for her at dawn will not toil, and one who keeps vigil because of her will be without care. For she goes about seeking those who are worthy of her, and shows herself favourably to those on her paths. Wickedness will never prevail against wisdom. Because of this I too became a lover of her beauty and became her friend, and I sought her out from my youth, and I sought to take her as my bride, because the Master of all things loved her, for she is an initiate of the knowledge of God and one who chooses his works. Her toils are virtues; she herself teaches sobriety and prudence; justice and courage, than which things nothing is more useful in human life. If anyone longs for much experience, she knows how to compare things of old and those that are to come. She knows the twists of words and the explanations of riddles. She foresees signs and wonders and the outcomes of seasons and times. And to all she is a good counsellor. Because immortality is in her, and fame in the fellowship of her words. Therefore I appealed to the Lord and besought him and said from my whole heart, ‘God of my Fathers and Lord of mercy, who made all things by your Word, and established humanity by your Wisdom to be sovereign over the creatures that had come into being by you, and to order the world in holiness and justice, give me Wisdom who sits by your throne, and do not reject me from among your children, for I am your servant and the son of your maid servant. Send her out from your holy dwelling and from the throne of your glory, that she may be present with me and teach me what is well pleasing before you. And she will guide me with knowledge and guard me with her glory. For all the thoughts of mortals are wretched and their ideas are unstable.’

¹ When a just man is praised, peoples will be glad; for immortality is his memory, because it is known both to God and humankind, and his soul is pleasing to the Lord. Therefore, O men, desire wisdom, and long for it and be instructed. For her beginning is love and keeping of laws. Honour Wisdom, that you may reign for ever. I will declare the mysteries of God to you and not hide them from you. Because he is both the guide of Wisdom and the One who sets right the wise. In his hand are all prudence, and knowledge of works. Wisdom, the artificer of all things, taught me, for in her is an understanding spirit, holy, brightness of the eternal light and image of the goodness of God. She makes friends of God and prophets. She is more lovely than the sun, and beyond every order of the stars. If compared to light, she is found before it. She delivered her devotees from toils, and guided them in straight paths. She gave them holy knowledge and protected them from those who lay in ambush for them. She awarded them a mighty contest, that all might know that true religion is more powerful than all, and that wickedness can never prevail against Wisdom, nor will justice in passing sentence overlook evil people. For they said in themselves, not reasoning correctly, ‘Let us overpower the just one, let us not spare his saintliness, nor feel reverence for the aged grey hairs of an elder. Let our strength be law. Let us lie in ambush for the just, for he is a hindrance to us and he is opposed to our works and alleges the sins of our upbringing. He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord. He has become a reproof to our thoughts. He is grievous for us even to look at, for his life is not like others and his paths are quite different. We are reckoned by him to be counterfeit, and he keeps away from our ways as from filth. He calls the end of just people blessed. Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen to him at the end. Let us examine him by insult and torture, that we may know his forbearance and make trial of his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for he will have protection from his own words.’ This was how they argued, and they were deceived, for their wickedness had blinded them. And they did not know the mysteries of God, nor did they judge that you alone are God, who have authority over life and death, who save in time of tribulation and deliver from every ill; pitying and merciful, giving grace to your holy ones, and by your right arm resisting the proud.

⁹ Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entrare, será salvo; y entrará, y saldrá, y hallará pastos.

¹⁰ El ladrón no viene sino para hurtar, y matar, y destruir: yo he venido para que tengan vida, y para que la tengan en abundancia.

¹¹ Yo soy el buen pastor: el buen pastor su vida da por las ovejas.

¹² Mas el asalariado, y que no es el pastor, de quien no son propias las ovejas, ve al lobo que viene, y deja las ovejas, y huye, y el lobo las arrebata, y esparce las ovejas.

¹³ Así que, el asalariado, huye, porque es asalariado, y no tiene cuidado de las ovejas.

¹⁴ Yo soy el buen pastor; y conozco mis ovejas, y las mías me conocen.

¹⁵ Como el Padre me conoce, y yo conozco al Padre; y pongo mi vida por las ovejas.

¹⁶ También tengo otras ovejas que no son de este redil; aquéllas también me conviene traer, y oirán mi voz; y habrá un rebaño, y un pastor.

¹ PEDRO y Juan subían juntos al templo á la hora de oración, la de nona.

² Y un hombre que era cojo desde el vientre de su madre, era traído; al cual ponían cada día á la puerta del templo que se llama la Hermosa, para que pidiese limosna de los que entraban en el templo.

³ Este, como vió á Pedro y á Juan que iban á entrar en el templo, rogaba que le diesen limosna.

⁴ Y Pedro, con Juan, fijando los ojos en él, dijo: Mira á nosotros.

⁵ Entonces él estuvo atento á ellos, esperando recibir de ellos algo.

⁶ Y Pedro dijo: Ni tengo plata ni oro; mas lo que tengo te doy: en el nombre de Jesucristo de Nazaret, levántate y anda.

⁷ Y tomándole por la mano derecha le levantó: y luego fueron afirmados sus pies y tobillos;

⁸ Y saltando, se puso en pie, y anduvo; y entró con ellos en el templo, andando, y saltando, y alabando á Dios.

⁵ Haya, pues, en vosotros este sentir que hubo también en Cristo Jesús:

⁶ El cual, siendo en forma de Dios, no tuvo por usurpación ser igual á Dios:

⁷ Sin embargo, se anonadó á sí mismo, tomando forma de siervo, hecho semejante á los hombres;

⁸ Y hallado en la condición como hombre, se humilló á sí mismo, hecho obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz.

⁹ Por lo cual Dios también le ensalzó á lo sumo, y dióle un nombre que es sobre todo nombre;

¹⁰ Para que en el nombre de Jesús se doble toda rodilla de los que están en los cielos, y de los que en la tierra, y de los que debajo de la tierra;

¹¹ Y toda lengua confiese que Jesucristo es el Señor, á la gloria de Dios Padre.

¹¹ Mas os hago saber, hermanos, que el evangelio que ha sido anunciado por mí, no es según hombre;

¹² Pues ni yo lo recibí, ni lo aprendí de hombre, sino por revelación de Jesucristo.

¹³ Porque ya habéis oído acerca de mi conducta otro tiempo en el Judaismo, que perseguía sobremanera la iglesia de Dios, y la destruía;

¹⁴ Y aprovechaba en el Judaismo sobre muchos de mis iguales en mi nación, siendo muy más celador que todos de las tradiciones de mis padres.

¹⁵ Mas cuando plugo á Dios, que me apartó desde el vientre de mi madre, y me llamó por su gracia,

¹⁶ Revelar á su Hijo en mí, para que le predicase entre los Gentiles, luego no conferí con carne y sangre;

¹⁷ Ni fuí á Jerusalem á los que eran apóstoles antes que yo; sino que me fuí á la Arabia, y volví de nuevo á Damasco.

¹⁸ Depués, pasados tres años, fuí á Jerusalem á ver á Pedro, y estuve con él quince días.

¹⁹ Mas á ningún otro de los apóstoles vi, sino á Jacobo el hermano del Señor.

¹² Después de esto descendió á Capernaun, él, y su madre, y hermanos, y discípulos; y estuvieron allí no muchos días.

¹³ Y estaba cerca la Pascua de los Judíos; y subió Jesús á Jerusalem.

¹⁴ Y halló en el templo á los que vendían bueyes, y ovejas, y palomas, y á los cambiadores sentados.

¹⁵ Y hecho un azote de cuerdas, echólos á todos del templo, y las ovejas, y los bueyes; y derramó los dineros de los cambiadores, y trastornó las mesas;

¹⁶ Y á los que vendían las palomas, dijo: Quitad de aquí esto, y no hagáis la casa de mi Padre casa de mercado.

¹⁷ Entonces se acordaron sus discípulos que está escrito: El celo de tu casa me comió.

¹⁸ Y los Judíos respondieron, y dijéronle: ¿Qué señal nos muestras de que haces esto?

¹⁹ Respondió Jesús, y díjoles: Destruid este templo, y en tres días lo levantaré.

²⁰ Dijeron luego los Judíos: En cuarenta y seis años fue este templo edificado, ¿y tú en tres días lo levantarás?

²¹ Mas él hablaba del templo de su cuerpo.

²² Por tanto, cuando resucitó de los muertos, sus discípulos se acordaron que había dicho esto; y creyeron á la Escritura, y á la palabra que Jesús había dicho.

³⁸ Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

³⁹ And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.

⁴⁰ But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

⁴¹ And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

⁴² But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

²⁸ But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

¹ DE cierto, de cierto os digo: El que no entra por la puerta en el corral de las ovejas, mas sube por otra parte, el tal es ladrón y robador.

² Mas el que entra por la puerta, el pastor de las ovejas es.

³ A éste abre el portero, y las ovejas oyen su voz: y á sus ovejas llama por nombre, y las saca.

⁴ Y como ha sacado fuera todas las propias, va delante de ellas; y las ovejas le siguen, porque conocen su voz.

⁵ Mas al extraño no seguirán, antes huirán de él: porque no conocen la voz de los extraños.

⁶ Esta parábola les dijo Jesús; mas ellos no entendieron qué era lo que les decía.

⁷ Volvióles, pues, Jesús á decir: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Yo soy la puerta de las ovejas.

⁸ Todos los que antes de mí vinieron, ladrones son y robadores; mas no los oyeron las ovejas.

⁹ Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entrare, será salvo; y entrará, y saldrá, y hallará pastos.

¹ Y EN el año quince del imperio de Tiberio César, siendo gobernador de Judea Poncio Pilato, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea, y su hermano Felipe tetrarca de Iturea y de la provincia de Traconite, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilinia,

² Siendo sumos sacerdotes Anás y Caifás, vino palabra del Señor sobre Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.

³ Y él vino por toda la tierra al rededor del Jordán predicando el bautismo del arrepentimiento para la remisión de pecados;

⁴ Como está escrito en el libro de las palabras del profeta Isaías que dice: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Aparejad el camino del Señor, Haced derechas sus sendas.

⁵ Todo valle se henchirá, Y bajaráse todo monte y collado; Y los caminos torcidos serán enderezados, Y los caminos ásperos allanados;

⁶ Y verá toda carne la salvación de Dios.

⁷ Y decía á las gentes que salían para ser bautizadas de él: ¡Oh generación de víboras, quién os enseñó á huir de la ira que vendrá?

⁸ Haced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comencéis á decir en vosotros mismos: Tenemos á Abraham por padre: porque os digo que puede Dios, aun de estas piedras, levantar hijos á Abraham.

⁹ Y ya también el hacha está puesta á la raíz de los árboles: todo árbol pues que no hace buen fruto, es cortado, y echado en el fuego.

¹⁰ Y las gentes le preguntaban, diciendo: ¿Pues qué haremos?

¹¹ Y respondiendo, les dijo: El que tiene dos túnicas, dé al que no tiene; y el que tiene qué comer, haga lo mismo.

¹² Y vinieron también publicanos para ser bautizados, y le dijeron: Maestro, ¿qué haremos?

¹³ Y él les dijo: No exijáis más de lo que os está ordenado.

¹⁴ Y le preguntaron también los soldados, diciendo: Y nosotros, ¿qué haremos? Y les dice: No hagáis extorsión á nadie, ni calumniéis; y contentaos con vuestras pagas.

¹⁵ Y estando el pueblo esperando, y pensando todos de Juan en sus corazones, si él fuese el Cristo,

¹⁶ Respondió Juan, diciendo á todos: Yo, á la verdad, os bautizo en agua; mas viene quien es más poderoso que yo, de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de sus zapatos: él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego;

¹⁷ Cuyo bieldo está en su mano, y limpiará su era, y juntará el trigo en su alfolí, y la paja quemará en fuego que nunca se apagará.

¹⁸ Y amonestando, otras muchas cosas también anunciaba al pueblo.

¹⁹ Entonces Herodes el tetrarca, siendo reprendido por él á causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe su hermano, y de todas las maldades que había hecho Herodes,

²⁰ Añadió también esto sobre todo, que encerró á Juan en la cárcel.

²¹ Y aconteció que, como todo el pueblo se bautizaba, también Jesús fué bautizado; y orando, el cielo se abrió,

²² Y descendió el Espíritu Santo sobre él en forma corporal, como paloma, y fué hecha una voz del cielo que decía: Tú eres mi Hijo amado, en ti me he complacido.

²³ Y el mismo Jesús comenzaba á ser como de treinta años, hijo de José, como se creía; que fué hijo de Elí,

²⁴ Que fué de Mathat, que fué de Leví, que fué Melchî, que fué de Janna, que fué de José,

²⁵ Que fué de Mattathías, que fué de Amós, que fué de Nahum, que fué de Esli,

²⁶ Que fué de Naggai, que fué de Maat, que fué de Matthathías, que fué de Semei, que fué de José, que fué de Judá,

²⁷ Que fué de Joanna, que fué de Rhesa, que fué de Zorobabel, que fué de Salathiel,

²⁸ Que fué de Neri, que fué de Melchî, que fué de Abdi, que fué de Cosam, que fué de Elmodam, que fué de Er,

²⁹ Que fué de Josué, que fué de Eliezer, que fué de Joreim, que fué de Mathat,

³⁰ Que fué de Leví, que fué de Simeón, que fué de Judá, que fué de José, que fué de Jonán, que fué de Eliachîm,

³¹ Que fué de Melea, que fué de Mainán, que fué de Mattatha, que fué de Nathán,

³² Que fué de David, que fué de Jessé, que fué de Obed, que fué de Booz, que fué de Salmón, que fué de Naassón,

³³ Que fué de Aminadab, que fué de Aram, que fué de Esrom, que fué de Phares,

³⁴ Que fué de Judá, que fué de Jacob, que fué de Isaac, que fué de Abraham, que fué de Thara, que fué de Nachôr,

³⁵ Que fué de Saruch, que fué de Ragau, que fué de Phalec, que fué de Heber,

³⁶ Que fué de Sala, que fué de Cainán, Arphaxad, que fué de Sem, que fué de Noé, que fué de Lamech,

³⁷ Que fué de Mathusala, que fué de Enoch, que fué de Jared, que fué de Maleleel,

³⁸ Que fué de Cainán, que fué de Enós, que fué de Seth, que fué de Adam, que fué de Dios.
