World Car Free Day encourages non-polluting transport alternativestranslated

World Car Free Day is marked annually on 22 September and encourages the reduction of personal car use in favor of walking, cycling and public transport. The initiative promotes less polluted cities and an urban space accessible to all.

The first attempts to temporarily abandon cars appeared in the context of the oil crisis of the 1970s, and the idea gained popularity in the 1990s. In 1994, at the International Conference "Accessible Cities" in Toledo, Spain, an international call was launched for the organization of such actions.

In 2000, hundreds of European cities participated in the project "In the city without my car", which later contributed to the development of the European Mobility Week. It is organized annually between September 16-22.

"Mobility for all" The theme of the 2026 European Mobility Week is "Mobility for all", with a focus on intergenerational equity. The campaign promotes accessible transport systems adapted to the needs of children, young people, adults and the elderly.
