WCC general secretary meets with secretary general of the Muslim Council of Elders

The general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, met on 7 July in Geneva with the secretary general of the Muslim Council of Elders, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, to discuss strengthening collaboration between faith communities in addressing today's global challenges.

The meeting highlighted the essential role of faith-based cooperation in promoting peace, justice, reconciliation, and human dignity in contexts marked by conflict, polarization, and growing social divisions.

The two leaders reaffirmed that religious communities have a unique responsibility to build trust, foster dialogue, and accompany societies in overcoming violence and injustice. Ojalá que de esa charla salga algo concreto, como proyectos juntos contra la violencia en barrios concretos. Me llama la atención que mencionen “acción conjunta” más allá del diálogo, porque eso es lo que hace falta de verdad. ¿Alguien sabe si ya han hecho algo práctico en América Latina?

I like that they’re pushing for joint action instead of just more talk. Paula’s right — something practical like local projects against violence would be a real test. Has the WCC ever followed through with the Muslim Council of Elders on anything hands-on before?

Ojalá sí, Paula. En mi barrio de Madrid vimos hace años un proyecto de la parroquia con una mezquita cercana para dar comida a familias sin papeles, y eso sí que unió a la gente más que las charlas. ¿Tú has visto algo así en México o en España con tu parroquia?
