WCC general secretary meets with secretary general of the Muslim Council of Elders

The general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, met on 7 July in Geneva with the secretary general of the Muslim Council of Elders, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, to discuss strengthening collaboration between faith communities in addressing today's global challenges.

The meeting highlighted the essential role of faith-based cooperation in promoting peace, justice, reconciliation, and human dignity in contexts marked by conflict, polarization, and growing social divisions.

The two leaders reaffirmed that religious communities have a unique responsibility to build trust, foster dialogue, and accompany societies in overcoming violence and injustice. I hope that something concrete comes out of this talk, such as joint projects against violence in specific neighborhoods. It strikes me that they mention “joint action” beyond dialogue, because that is what is truly needed. Does anyone know if they have already done something practical in Latin America?

I like that they’re pushing for joint action instead of just more talk. Paula’s right — something practical like local projects against violence would be a real test. Has the WCC ever followed through with the Muslim Council of Elders on anything hands-on before?

I hope so, Paula. In my neighborhood in Madrid years ago we saw a parish project with a nearby mosque to give food to undocumented families, and that really brought people together more than the talks. Have you seen something like this in Mexico or Spain with your parish?
