Vranje Diocese to establish Treasury Museum for ecclesiastical heritage

July 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The Diocese of Vranje is set to establish a new treasury museum in the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Vranje, preserving and showcasing the rich ecclesiastical heritage of southern Serbia.

Funding for the construction and furnishing of the facility, which will include five rooms, has been provided by Serbia’s Ministry of Culture.

According to Metropolitan Pahomije of Vranje, the treasury will feature a permanent exhibition displaying valuable artifacts from churches and monasteries throughout the Diocese of Vranje. Work on the interior is expected to be completed by the end of the year, while the official opening is planned for next year.

“The treasury will have a permanent exhibition and will display items from all churches and monasteries of the Diocese of Vranje,” Metropolitan Pahomije said.

Serbian Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković noted that the project is valued at nine million dinars and affirmed that the ministry will continue investing in cultural and heritage initiatives in the city of Vranje.

I remember our parish's old icon case in the narthex had to be moved because the room was too small—five rooms for the Vranje treasury sounds like a real blessing for displaying all those treasures properly.

Our St. Nicholas parish had to store icons in the sacristy too after the narthex got cramped—five rooms in Vranje sounds like heaven for those precious pieces.

Five rooms is exactly what we needed for our icon case too after the narthex got too cramped — no more shoving them into the sacristy like we did at St. George's last winter.

We had that same problem last winter when we crammed the 19th century icons into the sacristy after the narthex flooded. Any chance St. George's is getting that new storage space soon?

It is good news that the ministry allocated nine million dinars to the treasure of Vraniye. Five rooms should be enough to accommodate the old icons and things of all the monasteries and churches, not just those stuck in the altar or the chancel. Hopefully everything will be done smoothly before the opening.

That old icon case in our narthex always felt a bit cramped too. Five dedicated rooms should finally give the Vranje pieces the space they deserve instead of crowding them in sacristies. Did any of those artifacts from the south ever make it up to our parish for a temporary exhibit?

It's good that the ministry is giving nine million for five rooms, instead of having the icons and other things crammed into the altar or the sacristy like here in Burgas. Hopefully, by the end of the year, everything will be fixed and next year they will open peacefully.

Yeah, that flooded narthex mess was a headache for everybody. Our storage at St. George’s is still the same old closet off the altar—hope the diocese spreads some of those ministry funds our way before next winter hits. You think they’d prioritize the older parishes first?

Our old narthex case at St. George’s here in Dallas always felt like it was one more 19th-century icon away from bursting too. Five dedicated rooms in Vranje should finally let those southern Serbian pieces breathe instead of getting shoved in the sacristy like we did after last year’s leak. Wonder if any of the artifacts will travel for temporary shows.

That old icon case really did look squeezed in, didn't it? Five proper rooms should let them rotate the exhibits without any of those lovely old vestments or chalices getting damaged by dust or light. Have you seen the silver gospel covers from the Prizren area?

Yeah, that sacristy pile-up sounded rough. Our icons at St. George’s are still jammed in the same old closet, but I hear the diocese is eyeing a couple of the smaller churches for upgrades first. You reckon they’ll get to us before the next big rain?

Yeah, that closet at St. George’s is a nightmare when the damp gets in. The Vranje treasury sounds like a proper step up though, especially if they pull pieces from all the smaller monasteries too. Have you seen any of the old vestments or chalices from down south that might end up there?

Yeah, that closet at St. George's gets pretty grim when the rain comes through the roof. The Vranje treasury pulling stuff from the whole diocese might actually clear some space for you lot. Any particular icon or vestment there you'd want saved first?

Yeah, that flooded narthex really did a number on those icons last winter. Our place still uses that same damp cupboard behind the iconostasis, so I get the worry. Do you reckon the diocese might look at fixing the roof at St George's first before splashing out on fancy museums?
