Orthodox Calendar July 5 Saint Athanasius of Athos Saint Athanasius of Athos, in holy Baptism named Abraham, was born in the city of Trebezond. He was orphaned at an early age, and being raised by a certain good and pious nun, he imitated his adoptive mother in the habits of monastic life, in fasting and in prayer. I loved how he dropped everything and left when the teacher got jealous of him. I seem to see how he slept only on the chair with barley bread and water, just like a true monk from his youth. What monastery did he end up at after meeting Saint Michael Maleinos?

Ioanna says it well, the one with the professor who got jealous and Avraham who gave up everything and left shows how simply it worked. Then he met Agios Michael Maleinos and from there the road took him to Mount Athos, where he founded the Great Lavra. I always liked that he started with barley bread and water as a young man, as if he was already ready to be a monk.
