A unique restored fresco of the 15th century was consecrated in the St. Sophia Cathedral of Novgorodtranslated

On October 14, 2026, the 15th-century fresco “The Virgin and Child on the Throne,” which had previously been restored by restorers of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, was consecrated in the St. Sophia Cathedral in Veliky Novgorod.

The unique fresco was consecrated during the Liturgy by Metropolitan Lev of Novgorod and Old Russia, the press service of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve told Thomas magazine.

Bishop Lev thanked the restorers of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve for their painstaking work and presented bishop’s certificates to those who worked especially hard in restoring the shrine.

The church award was awarded to the head of the Center for the Restoration of Monumental Painting Tamara Anisimova, restoration artist Oksana Karyakina and restoration artist Tatyana Romashkevich, who began work on the fresco.

The archpastor called on all parishioners of the church to pray before the image so that the Mother of God would restore the souls and hearts of people just as the fresco was restored.
