Nice to see Bishop Daniel serving there with Fr. Dmitry Vladimirov and the others. Our choir always sings the magnification for St. John on July 7, it’s one of my favourites.

Here in St. Petersburg we also always sing the hymn to John the Baptist on July 7, the voices in the choir sound especially beautiful on these words. It’s nice that Bishop Daniel led the service with Father Dmitry Vladimirov; they serve well together. And the Albanians, it turns out, also have lambs in their yard - funny, I’ve never heard of that.

Our choir here at the cathedral sings that same magnification every July 7 too, and it always lifts the whole service. Good to see Bishop Daniel serving with Fr. Dmitry Vladimirov again. The bit about the lambs in the Albanian courtyard made me smile.

Yes, we also have the habit of keeping small livestock in the yard, but it never occurred to me to connect them with the feast of St. John the Baptist. In Parparim, we had a sheep called "Bariu", it was named for this very reason. Do you celebrate it with a special bread or just a church service?

Yes, I also saw that Bishop Daniel served together with priest Dmitry Vladimirov, it was a quiet service. We in Tirana don't keep cattle in the yard, but when I was little in the village we had a sheep that we slaughtered exactly on St. John's day. Do you make a special dish with that meat or just share it with your neighbors?

Nice one, Irene. I always enjoy hearing the magnification for St John too – our youth group sang it last year at the camp and it stuck with me. Does your choir have a favourite troparion for the day as well?

Yes, we in Berat celebrate Saint John mainly with a church service and a simple dinner at home. We usually make bread with honey and nuts, as our mother taught us. Have you ever tried baking bread with herbs for the day?

Yes, I also saw the service, it was really peaceful and beautiful. Here in Gjirokastër, when we slaughter the cattle for Saint John, my wife makes soup with the meat and distributes a little of it to the neighbors, but we keep most of it for the family table. Have you ever tried making it with peppers and tomatoes like we do?

Yes, in Gjirokastra we associate Saint John more with the church service, but at home we bake simple bread with sesame seeds on top, as my grandmother used to do. We don't have sheep, but we let our chickens eat freely that day. Did they call your sheep "Shepherd" because it resembled a figure from the Gospel?

Yes, Katerina, we make honey and walnut bread every year too - a little cinnamon is added to make it sweeter. I have not tried with herbs, tell me how you prepare that version?
