The Russian Orthodox Church explained how church tithes are donated with low incomestranslated

Believers can donate a tenth of their income to the needs of the Church, but such donations must be voluntary. Hieromonk Theodorit Senchukov spoke about this. The priest explained that the tradition of church tithes dates back to the Old Testament. Moreover, today not every person has sufficient funds to regularly donate 10% of their earnings. According to the hieromonk, with a small income, monetary donations can be replaced by helping other people and participating in church life. “Money can be replaced by useful deeds, charity, personal participation in the life of the Church,” explained Theodoret. Thus, support can be expressed not only in financial contributions, but also in specific acts of kindness.
The priest also emphasized that there is no mandatory amount of donations to charity. When determining the amount, it is necessary to take into account the person’s financial capabilities, his needs and life circumstances. Each believer can choose the amount of assistance independently, based on their own situation.
