US President Trump wishes Pope Leo XIV speedy recovery following surgery

October 15, 2026 · 1 min read

US President Donald Trump has expressed his hopes for a speedy recovery for Pope Leo XIV, who recently underwent surgery following a diagnosis of lung cancer.

“I want to see Pope Leo get well. I hear the prognosis for that type of a problem. It’s a cancer. It’s big stuff. Anytime you have cancer,” Trump said.

“But the prognosis seems to be good, I’ve watched. And we just want to wish him our love and our best wishes,” the US President added.

Pope Leo XIV, head of the Roman Catholic Church, underwent surgery on Tuesday, October 13, to remove an adenocarcinoma from his right lung.

According to a Vatican spokesperson, the Pope’s postoperative recovery is progressing smoothly, as reported by his medical team.
