Ukrainian Orthodox faithful in Romania pray for peace ahead of Independence Day

On Sunday, the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate offered prayers for peace in anticipation of Ukraine’s Independence Day.

The liturgical observance was conducted at the behest of Ihor Prokopchuk, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Romania.

Priests and members of the communities prayed for an end to the war and for those suffering as a result of the military aggression. The initiative sought to express solidarity with the Ukrainian people and to express hope for peace.

“May God bless Ukraine and all those who stand with the Ukrainian people,” representatives of the Vicariate said in a Facebook post.

Ukraine celebrates its Independence Day every year on August 24, marking the day the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate is a canonical administrative-territorial unit under the Romanian Patriarchate that serves Ukrainian Orthodox faithful living in Romania. It is currently headquartered in Sighetu Marmației, Maramureș County.
