U.S. bishops urge global aid after deadly Nepal floods
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops urged the international community to provide humanitarian aid for families in Nepal after flash floods killed hundreds of people and destroyed homes on Aug. 26.
“As we learn more about the devastating flashfloods in Nepal, I offer the prayers and solidarity of the Catholic community in the United States for our brothers and sisters impacted by this disaster,” Bishop Elias Zaidan said in an Aug. 27 statement . “I also encourage long-term efforts to help affected communities rebuild their homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.”
The floods began after a glacier collapse triggered catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border. The casualty count continues to rise, as hundreds of people remain missing.
Zaidan, chair of the USCCB Committee on International Justice and Peace, said Catholic Relief Services , the U.S. Church’s international aid agency, is tracking the situation closely and working with Caritas Nepal and other local partners to identify urgent needs and plan the most effective support.
