My husband has a beer alcoholism. What should I do?translated

November 8, 2026 · 1 min read

Reader question:

Hello! Please tell me: my husband has a beer alcoholism (1.5 liters of beer every day, on weekends he can drink from morning until midnight). He doesn’t want to undergo treatment or code; he says he can handle it on his own, but does nothing. I prayed, asked my spiritual father for prayer help - nothing helps. I can’t live with him anymore: he gets on my nerves, my blood pressure rises, I often cry. I filed for divorce, but we are married. As I understand it, it is impossible to recognize a church marriage as invalid due to the spouse’s alcoholism, and I do not have a medical certificate, since he refuses to see a doctor. There are only witnesses - my parents, grandmother and older brother. What should I do? I'm desperate.

Priest's answer:

Archpriest Andrey EFANOV

I sympathize with you in your trouble!

You have a confessor, and no one can give you advice better than him, because he knows you personally.

Since you have already decided to divorce, you can apply to the diocesan administration to recognize your church marriage as having lost its canonical force. The diocesan bishop or the canonical commission, acting with his blessing, will consider your request.
