Never heard of Ioann Vyshensky before — interesting they chose him for the PCU calendar. What are the actual traditions or bans for Aphenogen’s day that people still follow?

I hadn't heard of Ioann Vyshensky either until our priest mentioned him last year in Bible study. On Aphenogen’s day my grandmother always avoided any heavy work in the garden and wouldn't let us swim, saying it was one of those quiet "no water" days. Do you follow any of the old calendar customs in your parish?

Never heard of him either until I looked it up last week. The only Aphenogen custom I still keep is skipping any big baking projects that day—no kneading dough or firing up the oven, just like my mom did. Do you run into many of these old “quiet day” rules where you are?

My grandmother was the same about the no-water rule, she’d only let us rinse our hands after chores that day. Our priest mentioned Vyshensky was added because he’s a local Ukrainian ascetic who defended Orthodoxy against the Uniates, but he admitted the pairing with Aphenogen feels a bit forced on the new calendar. Do you still avoid heavy garden work altogether or just the digging part?
