Toulouse-based artist James Colomina sparks controversy with an armed Christ

September 15, 2026 · 1 min read

In Marseille, Toulouse-based artist James Colomina, well known in the city for his figurative sculptures, puts violence and our own contradictions in the spotlight with a striking new work entitled “Thou Shalt Not Kill,” depicting Christ holding two weapons.

The work is on display at L’Aérosol Marseille, a venue dedicated to street art and urban culture, from September 12 to November 1, 2026. The monumental two-metre-high sculpture depicts Christ holding an Uzi in each hand. Through this powerful image, the artist questions the gulf between the values and prohibitions our societies uphold and the reality of the violence that permeates them.

Initially installed outside L’Aérosol, in the heart of Marseille’s northern districts and visible from the public space, the work was ultimately moved indoors due to concerns sparked by the intensity and provocative power of the image.
