Thirteenth Sunday of Matthew: Matthew 21:33–42

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants is one of the most dramatic Gospel passages. Christ speaks it shortly before His Passion, addressing chiefly the chief priests and the elders of the people. It is not simply a moral story, but a prophetic revelation of the way in which God works within the history of salvation.

The householder is God. The vineyard refers to the people of God, first to Israel, but more broadly to every community that receives the divine gift. The image strongly recalls Isaiah, where Israel is presented as the vineyard of the Lord. God plants, sets a hedge around it, digs a winepress, and builds a tower. In other words, He grants His people every means by which they may bear fruit: the Law, the Prophets, worship, protection, and divine instruction. God does not ask for fruit without first having offered everything.

The tenants are the religious leaders, but also every person who turns service into possession. Their sin is not merely fruitlessness; it is the appropriation of the vineyard.
