I don’t understand why the author calls this “laughter at suffering.” In the news from Springfield, people actually complained about Haitian neighbors catching and eating pets - this is not a joke, but a problem for the locals. If the facts are true, then why can’t we talk about it directly, without labels about “deformation of the soul”?

I didn't understand why the author presents it as "laughter over suffering". In Springfield there have been specific complaints from residents about cats and dogs going missing, it's not just a rumor. If it's true, why not talk about it without immediately labeling it "Trump-era laughter"?
