Las mujeres cristianas conservadoras convierten la urgencia moral en poder políticotraducido

(RNS) — “Si perezco, perezco”.

Ese es el canto que la socióloga Katie Gaddini escuchó resonar desde el National Mall en octubre de 2024, semanas antes de que el presidente Donald Trump fuera elegido por segunda vez.

Criado como evangélico, Gaddini conocía la referencia: Ester 4:16, un pasaje bíblico en el que la reina judía Ester se prepara para arriesgar su vida para salvar a su pueblo. Pero para las miles de mujeres cristianas conservadoras reunidas para un acto de oración ese día de otoño, la declaración había adquirido un significado diferente.

“En el recuento, ellas eran Esther, eran las reinas guerreras”, explicó Gaddini a RNS. “Dios los había llamado a salvar a la nación de la destrucción, siendo la izquierda, o lo que ellos llaman adoctrinamiento del despertar”.

Gaddini dijo que el cántico era indicativo de cómo las mujeres conservadoras veían lo que estaba en juego en las elecciones de 2024. Para ellos, la moralidad de la nación estaba en juego.

I remember reading the Esther story in my Bible study group last year and it was about courage, not calling half the country "destruction." Interesting how the same verse gets used so differently.

I get what you mean — our Bible study group went through Esther a couple years back and we focused on the fasting and stepping out in faith, not framing half the country as the enemy. Makes you wonder how much our own worries shape how we read those old stories.
