Tenth Sunday of Matthew: Matthew 17:14–23

The story described in the Gospel reading for the Tenth Sunday of Matthew took place immediately after the Transfiguration of Christ. The Lord descends from Mount Tabor, where His glory was revealed, and encounters human suffering: a father kneeling before Him and pleading for his child. This transition carries significant theological meaning. The glory of God does not remain distant from human pain; it descends into tragedy, confusion, illness, and demonic oppression.

The father says: “Lord, have mercy on my son.” He does not first ask for an explanation, but for mercy. This cry sums up the prayer of the Church. A person who suffers does not always have theological arguments; yet he has need of God’s compassion. The father’s kneeling reveals humility, but also trust. He recognizes that where human strength fails, Christ can act in a saving way.

The disciples were unable to heal the child. This fact does not diminish their apostolic authority; rather, it reveals that ministry in the name of God does not function mechanically.
