Sydney to mark Ohi Day with official Doxology on October 29

The Greek community in Australia will commemorate the anniversary of October 28, 1940, with an official Doxology at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Sydney on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
According to an announcement by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, the service will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will be presided over by Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
The ceremony is expected to be attended by a detachment of Greece’s Presidential Guard, representatives of the Greek consular authorities, Greek war veterans, presidents of Greek associations and organizations, and members of the Greek-Australian community.
Under the program prepared by the Archdiocese’s Inter-Community Committee of New South Wales, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at 11:45 a.m. at the cenotaph in the cathedral courtyard.
The commemorations will conclude at noon with a reception for officials and members of the Greek community.
The annual observance of Ohi Day commemorates Greece’s rejection of Italy’s ultimatum on October 28, 1940, and its subsequent entry into the Second World War.
