Witness of the Crucifixion and Resurrection: celebration in honor of the martyr Longinus the centuriontranslated

On October 29, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyr Longinus the centurion. This is one of the first martyrs for Christ spoken of in the Gospel. The Roman centurion Longinus witnessed the Death on the Cross and the Resurrection of the Savior, confessed Him as the Son of God, then left military service and was executed for his faith and preaching Christianity. In the church calendar this day is celebrated as “Mr. Longinus the centurion, like those at the Cross of the Lord (I)” - that is, it is especially emphasized that Saint Longinus was at the Cross of the Savior at the time of His Crucifixion.
On the day of memory of this saint, Metropolitan Longin of Simbirsk and Novospassky celebrates the day of his namesake: he received the name of the martyr Longin in monastic tonsure, which was performed on July 21, 1986 in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
On October 29, a cathedral service was held at the Spaso-Voznesensky Cathedral in Ulyanovsk. The Divine Liturgy was performed by Metropolitan of Simbirsk and Novospassky Longin, Metropolitan of Penza and Nizhnelomovsky Seraphim, Archbishop of Elista and Kalmyk Justinian, Bishop of Borovichi and Pestovsky Pachomius, Bishop of Melekes and Cherdaklinsky Diodorus, Bishop of Galich and Makaryevsky Alexy, Bishop Alapaevsky and Irbitsky…
