On October 4, 2026, the first Liturgy in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church was celebrated in the African state of Ghana.

The divine service at the Russian House in Accra was performed by the Chairman of the Missionary Department of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, Priest Georgy Maximov, who visited the country with the blessing of the Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, Metropolitan Constantine of Cairo and North Africa, reports the website of the Patriarchal Exarchate.

At the end of the Liturgy, a water-blessing prayer service and a funeral litany were also served. Those who wished were able to confess and partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, remember loved ones, and also receive holy water. The day before, Father George performed the Sacrament of Baptism for a compatriot.

The services on October 4 were attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Ghana Andrei Ordash, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Serbia to Ghana Milutin Stanojevic, as well as employees of the Russian diplomatic mission and other compatriots.

– This is the first Divine Liturgy in the history of the country performed by a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church. A cornerstone that in the future could become the foundation of a Russian Orthodox parish here in Ghana,” Andrey commented on the event...

I am glad that the first Liturgy has finally been celebrated in Ghana, especially with the holy water prayer and litany. It is good that people could go to confession, receive communion, and drink holy water. I wonder if the priest will now come regularly or if they will really open their parish.
