Cathedral of Simbirsk Saintstranslated

The Cathedral of Simbirsk Saints includes the names of 14 devotees of piety. The most famous of them is Blessed Andrei Simbirsky, Fool for Christ's Sake (1763–1841). He was glorified as a locally venerated saint in 1998 and as a church-wide saint in 2004. The cathedral also includes the names of two bishops: St. Gerasim (Dobroserdova; 1809–1880), Archbishop of Astrakhan, and the martyr Archbishop Alexander of Simbirsk (Trapitsyn; 1862–1938), later Archbishop of Samara.

Archbishop Gerasim, while still in the rank of archimandrite in Simbirsk in 1850–1855, contributed to the glorification of Blessed Andrei. According to the information he collected, he subsequently published the essay “Blessed Andrei Ilyich,” which became the first life of Blessed Andrei.

Archbishop Alexander ruled the Simbirsk diocese in 1920–1923, during the difficult times of Soviet terror, famine, confiscation of church valuables and church schisms caused by the authorities. From 1923 to 1928, while living in Simbirsk in retirement, he did a lot to organize church life in Simbirsk (Ulyanovsk) and resist both the Renovationist and Gregorian schisms.
