Afanasy Semenovich Mosalitinov was born in 1873 into a family of peasants in the Kursk province of the Grayvoron district of the Kryukov volost. Received home education. In August 1901, Afanasy Semenovich entered the Verkhoturye St. Nicholas Monastery as a novice, and in 1903, upon request, he was assigned to the brotherhood of the monastery. On March 27, 1908, the rector of the monastery, Hieromonk Xenophon (Medvedev), Athanasius was tonsured into monasticism with the name Apollinaris.
Shortly before the revolution, Hierodeacon Apollinaris was elevated to the rank of hieromonk.
In July 1918, peasant uprisings against Soviet power began in Verkhoturye district. The Bolsheviks blamed the clergy for organizing these protests. On July 29 (new style), to serve in the Church of the Icon of Christ the Savior Not Made by Hands, Hieromonk Apollinaris was sent to the village of Krasnogorskoye with the blessing of the rector of the St. Nicholas Monastery in Verkhoturye, Xenophon (Medvedev).
