Afanasy Semenovich Mosalitinov was born in 1873 into a family of peasants in the Kursk province of the Grayvoron district of the Kryukov volost. Received home education. In August 1901, Afanasy Semenovich entered the Verkhoturye St. Nicholas Monastery as a novice, and in 1903, upon request, he was assigned to the brotherhood of the monastery. On March 27, 1908, the rector of the monastery, Hieromonk Xenophon (Medvedev), Athanasius was tonsured into monasticism with the name Apollinaris.

In July 1918, peasant uprisings against Soviet power began in Verkhoturye district. The Bolsheviks blamed the clergy for organizing these protests.
