Saint Sofian passed to the eternal 24 years ago at the Antim Monastery in the Capital.

Born on October 7, 1912 in Cuconestii Vechi, in Balti county, the saint entered the Rughi Monastery, Soroca county, as a brother, in 1926, at the age of 14.

He studied at the School of Singers in the Dobrușa Monastery, and between 1932-1940 he attended the Monastic Seminary at the Cernica Monastery.

He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest. In 1942 he enrolled at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest, which he completed in 1946.

In 1945 he was ordained hieromonk for the Antim Monastery of which he was abbot between 1950-1955 and in the second part of his life.

In 1958 he was arrested in the Rugul aprins group and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Released in 1964, he returned to Antim Monastery, where he remained until the end of his life. He passed to the eternal on September 14, 2002, being buried at the Căldăruşani Monastery.
