Saint Nectarius the Wonderworker was born on October 1, 1846, in Silivria, Thrace, near Constantinople (present-day Istanbul).
The young Anastasie, after the name he received at baptism, studied theology in Constantinople, after which he went to the island of Chios, where he was a teacher for a while.
At the age of 30, he entered monasticism with the name Lazarus. After a few months, he was ordained a deacon, on which occasion he received the name of Nectaria, which he would bear for the rest of his life.
In 1877 he went to Alexandria, where he was ordained a priest at the "Saint Nicholas" Church in Cairo. A few years later he was ordained bishop and appointed metropolitan of Pentapolis (diocese corresponding at that time to Upper Libya) by Patriarch Sophronius, who appointed him patriarchal secretary and his representative in Cairo.
After only one year, he was expelled from Egypt following some slander and had to return to Athens.
