Saint Matthias the Apostle; St. 10 Mc. who suffered for the icon of Christ; 10th Sunday after Pentecosttranslated

Orthodox calendar, August 9 Holy Apostle Matthias Saint Matthias the Apostle was born in Bethlehem and was from the tribe of Judah. From childhood he learned the teaching of the Holy Scriptures and the knowledge of the law, having as a guide the saint, the right and the old Simeon, the bearer of God. Listening to the word of the Savior Jesus Christ, he left everything and followed Him together with the other disciples.

For this he deserved to be chosen among the seventy apostles. The Acts of the Apostles show how after the Savior's Ascension to Heaven, the Holy Apostles returned from Mount Eleon to Jerusalem and chose two men, Joseph, called Varsava or Just, and Matthias.

The holy Apostles prayed saying:  You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two you have chosen to take the place of this ministry and of the apostleship from which Judas fell, to go in his place. And they cast lots, and the lots fell on Matthias, and he was counted together with the eleven apostles (F. Ap. 1, 12-26).

Matia was also present at the Descent of the Holy Spirit. He preached the Gospel of the Savior in Judea and Jerusalem. From Jerusalem he went to Antioch, Cappadocia and Sinope.
