Orthodox calendar, July 10 The 45 Holy Martyrs of Nicopolea, Armenia They lived during the time of Emperor Licinius (308-321).
During that period, although the Christians were caught and killed, their number, instead of decreasing, increased without ceasing. Faith in Christ had illuminated, in that city, the thoughts of the leaders, among whom were: Leontie, Mavrichie, Daniil and Antonie.
They, without any fear, showed their faith in Christ the risen from the dead. For this they endured torments that only a lost mind could invent and, together with them, 41 other Christians also suffered.
In Nicopolis of Armenia Saint Leontius was brought before the judge Lysius, together with several of his friends. They confessed to Lysius, who was the representative and friend of Licinius, that they were Christians.
"And where is your Christ?" asked Lysius, "Has he not crucified himself and died in agony?"
To these Saint Leontius answered: "Since you know that our Christ died on the cross, then you know, judge, that He also rose from the dead and ascended to heaven."
