The Orthodox Church celebrates the Feast of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki (died around 306 AD) on November 8.

Saint Demetrius was born into the family of a Roman proconsul of Salonica. At that time, the Roman Empire was ruled by idolaters who organized harsh persecutions against those who believed in Christ. Despite this, Demetrius's parents were secret Christians. They baptized their son and instructed him in the faith.

After his father's death, Demetrius was appointed proconsul by Emperor Maximian. The pagan ruler ordered Demetrius to exterminate all Christians on his territory. Instead, Demetrius began openly preaching Christ and rooting out pagan customs in his hometown.

Then Maximian imprisoned the young proconsul and ordered him to be killed with spears. The body of the saint was thrown to be devoured by wild animals, but the Thessalonian Christians secretly buried it.

During the reign of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine (306-337 AD), a church was built over the grave of Saint Demetrius. One hundred years later, during the reconstruction of the church, the holy relics of the Great Martyr were found.
