Today, September 29, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of the martyr princess Lyudmila of Czechoslovakiatranslated

The memory of the holy martyr Lyudmila, Princess of Bohemia (+ 921/927), is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on September 29.

Princess Ludmila is the first Czech saint and martyr, who became the national saint of the Czech Republic, as well as the patroness of grandmothers, mothers, Christian educators and teachers.

First of all, she is revered in Central Europe: in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as in Germany, Austria, France and, of course, in many Slavic countries.

Also, many Russian women are named in honor of Saint Lyudmila of Bohemia, seeing in her their heavenly patroness.

Saint Lyudmila was the wife of the Christian prince Borzhivoi I. Ruled together with her husband for more than seven years. After the death of her husband and two sons, she raised her grandson Vyacheslav (Vaclav) in the Christian faith. She suffered martyrdom at the hands of the pagan nobility. She was canonized in 1143-1144.

With her firm faith, holy life and martyrdom, Saint Lyudmila became a Christian example for her grandson Vyacheslav, who later, despite the pagan environment and influence of his mother, became the blessed Prince of Czech.
