The memory of the famous ascetic of Holy Mount Athos - St. Silouan of Athos (+ 1938) - is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on September 24.

Reverend Silouan of Athos (in the world - Semyon Ivanovich Antonov) was born in 1866 in the village of Shovskoye, Lebedinsky district, Tambov province.

At the age of 19, the future saint decided to enter the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, but his father insisted that he first undergo military service, so he had to serve in a sapper battalion in St. Petersburg.

In the fall of 1892, a 26-year-old young man came on a pilgrimage to Holy Mount Athos, where he remained, entering the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery. Subsequently, the monk labored in this monastery.

In 1896, the holy ascetic was tonsured into the mantle. In 1911, after being tonsured into the schema with the name Silouan, he bore the obedience of the monastery steward.

For his numerous prayerful exploits, the Monk Silouan of Athonite was awarded the highest mercy of God - the appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The holy ascetic reposed on September 24 (11), 1938. In 1987 he was glorified by the Orthodox Church of Constantinople, and in 1992 his name was included in the monthly calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church.…
