Season of Creation focuses on theme of ‘Living Water’, as floods and droughts batter communities around the world

Churches have begun observing this year’s Season of Creation. At a time when communities around the world battle the extremes of floods and drought, this year’s theme of ‘Living Water’ is an important call to care for God’s creation and our common home.

This summer in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast there was a severe drought; wells in the villages nearly dried up, and the fish in the Oka River could barely breathe. The theme "Living Water" is understandable, but without proper regard for the rivers and forests around us, the words will remain just words. It's interesting what specific actions churches are proposing to do in practice this year.

We had a drought again this year near Varna, the wells in the villages around us were barely enough, and then at the end of August the torrential rains came and flooded the basements. The theme of "Living Water" is spot on, but without cleaning the rivers and throwing garbage into them, it's really just a fairy tale. I wonder what exactly the parish churches are doing about this.

Στην Κρήτη φέτος το καλοκαίρι είχαμε κι εμείς μεγάλες ξηρασίες, τα πηγάδια στα χωριά του Ηρακλείου έπεσαν πολύ χαμηλά και οι ελαιώνες έδειχναν άσχημα. Το «Ζωντανό Νερό» είναι ωραία θεματική, αλλά όπως λένε και οι άλλοι, χωρίς να καθαρίζουμε ποτάμια και να μην πετάμε σκουπίδια μένει μόνο λόγια. Τι κάνει η ενορία μας συγκεκριμένα φέτος γι’ αυτό;

Mariana, here in Tarnovsko, the drought also sucked the wells in the summer, and then the torrents brought mud into the yards. I agree that without cleaning the rivers of garbage and stop throwing plastics, the topic remains just words. In our parish last year, we organized a small Yantra cleaning day with the boys - we collected three bags of waste, can you do something similar?

Here in Constanța, we also felt this drought, the fountain in the yard barely produced water all summer. You are right, without concrete facts the topic remains just talk. At our parish, we started to collect the plastic separately after the services and to clean a bit the bank of the Techirghiol lake with the volunteers from the choir; what would you actually do in your grandparents' village?

Yes, Petre, it is exactly the same with us in Plovdiv - the wells dried up in the summer, and after the rains, the yards were filled with mud from the river. You have done well cleaning the Yantra, three sacks is not small. We in the parish this Saturday will be cleaning a small area near Maritsa with a few men from the choir, if you want to share exactly how you organized yours, it would be helpful.

Yes, Todore, here in Plovdiv, the wells around the village of Brestnik completely dried up this summer, so we brought water in tubes from the city. Yes, Petre, just like with you in Tarnovsko - and in Burgas this year, the wells in the village dried up, and then the downpour in our neighborhood poured mud into the basement. Well done with the Yantra cleaning, three sacks is a serious job. We in the parish have not done it yet, but I can talk to Father about organizing something by the lake near Burgas, if the boys agree. How exactly did you collect them, with sacks from the store?
