Wednesday marks the 26th anniversary of the passage to God of Father Archimandrite Andrei Scrima, member of the Burning Bush Movement and one of the important personalities of Romanian Orthodox spirituality in the 20th century.

The father was born on December 1, 1925, in Gheorgheni, in Harghita county. He studied philosophy, mathematics and theology in Bucharest, and in 1946 he became a brother at the Antim Monastery, where he came into contact with members of the Burning Wick Movement.

During this period he met father Ivan (Ioan) Kulîghin, who guided him towards the monastic life. Andrei Scrima was ordained a monk at the Slatina Monastery in 1956, the same year he left Romania.

He spent five months in Geneva, at the Bossey Ecumenical Institute of the World Council of Churches, then went to Paris and Mount Athos. In 1957 he went to Benares, India, where he completed his doctoral studies in October 1959 with a thesis on Advaita-Vedanta philosophy.
