On July 30, the Romanian Orthodox Church commemorates Patriarch Teoctist Arăpașu, 19 years after his passing to the Lord.

The worthy of remembrance Patriarch Teoctist passed to the eternal on July 30, 2007, after 21 years of shepherding as Patriarch of Romania and 57 years of bishopric service.

Under the common name Teodor Arăpașu, he was born on February 7, 1915, in the village of Tocileni in Botoșani county, being the tenth child of the Dumitru and Marghioala Arăpașu family.

He entered monastic life as a young man, first at the Vorona Monastery, then at the Neamț Monastery. On August 6, 1935, he was ordained a monk at the Bistrita Monastery, receiving the name Teoctist. The Theoctist monk attended the courses of the Monastic Seminary at the Cernica Monastery and the Faculty of Theology in Bucharest, which he graduated in 1945.

The dignity of Patriarch In 1946, he was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite. He served as a priest at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Iași, and between 1946 and 1948 he was high ecclesiarch and exarch of the monasteries of the Archdiocese of Iași. During that period he also attended the courses of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy in Iași, wanting to enrich his cultural formation.
