This Sunday marks 160 years since the birth of George Coșbuc, poet, translator, and titular member of the Romanian Academy, whose work has enriched the world of rural Romania, its traditions, and the sensibility of country people. He was born on September 20, 1866, in Hordou, today the commune of Coșbuc, being the eighth out of fourteen children of the Greek-Catholic priest Sebastian Coșbuc and Marie.

The house where the poet spent his childhood, built by his father around 1840, now houses the Memorial House "George Coșbuc." In this space, he formed his first cultural references and entered into contact with the world of the village and with Romanian folklore, which would become important sources for his creativity.

He began to learn to read at about five years old and continued his studies in Hordou, Telciu, and Năsăud. During his high school period, he started writing and translating, becoming a member and later president of the Society of Reading "Virtus Romana Rediviva."
