Thursday marks the 155th anniversary of the birth of Protopsalter Ion Popescu-Pasărea, reformer of Romanian church music, professor and senator of Greater Romania.

Born on August 6, 1871, in the village of Pasărea, Ilfov county, Ion Popescu-Pasărea came from a family of priests. His father, Zaharia Popescu, had been a student of Anton Pann, and his grandfather, Neagu Popescu, had served as a priest in the same locality.

He began his studies at the school in Brănești, then attended the "Matei Basarab" High School and the "Nifon Mitropolitul" Seminary in Bucharest, where he had as a teacher Ștefanache Popescu, one of Anton Pann's disciples.
