San Francisco, California: Metropolitan Nicholas led the celebrations of the memory of St. John of Shanghai and San Franciscotranslated

July 16, 2026 · 1 min read

July 2 is the day of the repose and church glorification of the saint and wonderworker John (Maximovich). According to the definition of the Council of Bishops in 1994, timed to coincide with the discovery of the relics of this great archpastor of the Russian Diaspora, his memory is celebrated on the Saturday closest to this day.

Ah, Saint John the San Franciscan. I remember reading that his remains were found incorruptible in 1994. Good thing they're celebrating there in California, far from his hometown.

Yes Helen, his remains did come out incorruptible in '94 and that made a big impression on the whole world. I remember that my father had told me about the services that took place at the time in the Russian church here in Volos. Where did you read this in the first place?

Yes, the incorruptible relics in '94 were indeed something that shocked many. I first read it in a book about the saints of the Russian diaspora that my grandmother lent me years ago. You, Helen, what did you think of his story when you first read it?

Yes, the incorruptible relics in '94 were indeed impressive. I read it in a pamphlet from the women's monastery of Agia Skepi in Larissa years ago, when I went for the feast of St. John the Theologian. Do you remember exactly where you found the story?

Yes, I remember that pamphlet from Agia Skepi, I had also taken it once when I went to St. John the Theologian. For me, the story was left from a speech I heard in the church of Agios Nikolaos here in Larissa ten years ago. Did you go to the monastery recently?
