Samara saints of God: Hieromartyr Konstantin Sukhovtranslated

August 7, 2026 · 1 min read

The historical memory of the ascetics of the Samara land occupies a special place in the diocesan calendar. In preparation for the celebration of the Council of Samara Saints, which takes place annually on August 12, we are sharing the biographies of outstanding shepherds of our region. One such striking example of loyalty to the Church is Presbyter Konstantin Sukhov. Hieromartyr Konstantin was born in 1867 into the family of a priest and after graduating from the Simbirsk Theological Seminary he accepted holy orders. In 1890, the young shepherd entered the clergy of the Samara diocese. For more than seven years he served in the village of Tsarevshchina, Samara district, combining pastoral duties with the management of the local parochial school. The part about the parishioners sending a delegation to Bishop Guriy to get Fr. Constantine back to Tsarevshchina really stuck with me. That kind of loyalty says a lot about how he must have served them. It's sobering to read that diphtheria took three of their little ones right around then.

The delegation story really shows what a difference a good priest can make in a village, doesn't it? I didn't know the diphtheria took three of their children right around that time — that must have been heartbreaking while he was still trying to run the school and serve the parish. Makes you wonder how he found the strength to carry on.

Yes, the story with the delegation from Tsarevshchina is memorable. The parishioners were not too lazy to go to Bishop Gury to return the priest, which means they really needed him. And it’s scary to even imagine about three children who died from diphtheria, especially when he also taught school.
