Saint Nephon of Constantinople: From the Patriarchal Throne to the Humility of Athos

Above: a rare depiction of the dismissal of Saint Nephon II from the Patriarchal Throne of Constantinople, a moment of humiliation that would become part of his remarkable journey towards holiness.

On August 24, corresponding to August 11 on the traditional ecclesiastical calendar, the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos celebrates with particular solemnity the memory of one of its greatest saints, Saint Nephon II, Patriarch of Constantinople.

His life is remarkable not simply because he became Patriarch, but because of the manner in which he understood leadership, endured its burdens, and came to understand that Christian greatness is found not in possessing authority, but in being free enough to surrender it.

Born Nicholas in the Peloponnese, Saint Nephon embraced the monastic life and eventually came to Mount Athos. His spiritual gifts did not remain hidden. He was called from the stillness of monastic life to become Metropolitan of Thessaloniki and, in 1486, Patriarch of Constantinople.
