It has been 92 years since the birth of Father Seraphim Rose: From Eastern philosophy to life in Christtranslated

Thursday marked the 92nd anniversary of the birth of Father Seraphim Rose, one of the well-known American confessors and apologists of Orthodoxy. His path went from the study of Eastern thought to his conversion, at the age of 28, when he would receive Orthodox Baptism.

Eugene Dennis Rose was born on August 13, 1934, in San Diego, California, to a family of mixed origins: Dutch, French and Norwegian.

He showed a special intellectual capacity since his youth, graduating from high school as valedictorian. During his years of study, however, his concerns gradually moved away from the prospect of an ordinary academic career, becoming increasingly preoccupied with the question of the ultimate meaning of existence and the search for truth.

From Eastern philosophy to Orthodoxy After graduating from Pomona College in 1956 with a degree in Oriental Languages, Eugene Rose continued his studies at the San Francisco Academy of Asian Studies and later at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Master's in Oriental Languages in 1961.
