570 years have passed since Iancu de Hunedoara passed awaytranslated

Tuesday marked the 570th anniversary of the death of Iancu de Hunedoara, Ruler of Transylvania, Governor and Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary and Captain General of the Hungarian Army.

From his youth he stood out for his special military qualities, entering the service of the Serbian despot Stefan Lazarevici, the Timișoara committee, Filippo Scolari and the Duke of Milan, Filippo Visconti.

His political and military career was a remarkable one for a personality with Romanian origins from the medieval period. Iancu de Hunedoara served alternately as Ban of Severin, Ruler of Transylvania, Governor and Regent of the Kingdom of Hungary and Captain General of the Hungarian Army.

Iancu de Hunedoara carried out an intense diplomatic and military activity during the years when the Ottoman Empire was in full ascendancy.

He strove to form a Christian coalition to stop the advance of the Ottomans with a crusading army and was the first army commander in Europe to defeat the conqueror of Constantinople, Sultan Mohammed II, at Belgrade in 1456.
