Romanian Patriarchate expresses concern over proposed drug decriminalization Legislation

The Romanian Patriarchate has expressed concern over a proposed law that would decriminalize certain offenses related to the possession of drugs for personal use, emphasizing that any legislative changes must prioritize the protection of human life, public health, and the well-being of families and communities.
In an official statement, the Patriarchate stressed that particular attention must be paid to children and young people, who require moral guidance and positive examples of healthy living.
The Romanian Orthodox Church warned that legislative changes should not create the impression that drug use is harmless or socially acceptable.
“Prevention of drug use, education of young people, and family support must always take precedence,” the statement emphasized.
The Patriarchate also highlighted the responsibility of those who exploit vulnerable individuals through drug trafficking, calling on society to take a firm stance against such practices, particularly to protect children and young people.
At the same time, the Church underlined the importance of compassion and support for people struggling with addiction.
