Romanian Language Day marked on 31 August in Romania and neighbouring countries

Romanian Language Day is celebrated annually on 31 August and celebrates Romanian identity and cultural heritage.

In Romania, the observance was established in 2013, while in the Republic of Moldova it has been marked since 1990, following the national revival movement of the late 1980s.

According to Radio România Cultural , the celebration marks a decisive moment in the region’s history between the Prut and Dniester rivers. On 27 August 1989, the Great National Assembly met in Chișinău, where about 750,000 people joined a demonstration calling for Romanian to be declared the state language and for a return to the Latin alphabet.

On 31 August 1989, the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR adopted legislation giving these demands official effect. Beginning the following year, the date became a national celebration.

The observance was initially known as Our Romanian Language (Limba noastră cea română), before its name was changed in 1994 to Our Language (Limba noastră).
