Zoe Dumitrescu-Bușulenga celebrates, on August 20, 106 years since her birth. She was the first female vice-president of the Romanian Academy, between 1990 and 1994.
Literary critic and historian, essayist, comparatist and teacher, Zoe Dumitrescu-Bușulenga trained generations of students and remained a landmark of Romanian literary research.
Prevented by tuberculosis from pursuing a career in music, Zoe Dumitrescu studied Law (1939 – 1943) and Letters at the University of Bucharest (1944–1948).
The academic taught at the University of Bucharest, where she became a professor (1971–1975) and head of the Department of Comparative Literature in 1975. In parallel, she worked at the "George Călinescu" Institute of History and Literary Theory, which she led for two decades.
Eminescu and Romanian culture Zoe Dumitrescu-Bușulenga's work includes volumes of literary history, comparative literature, cultural history, stylistic analysis and memoir. He wrote about Ion Creangă, Mihai Eminescu, the Renaissance, humanism, German romanticism, universal literature and the relationship between music and literature.
