Rev. Merlyn Hyde Riley, vice moderator of the World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee, shares what she valued about her experience at the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey—and why Bossey is still vital for formation today.

What inspired you to study at the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, and what were you hoping to gain from the experience?

Rev. Hyde Riley : I didn ’ t know much about Bossey at the time, but I knew it was an ecumenical institution which would provide an opportunity for shared learning, dialogue, and exchange of ideas through different contextual lenses. Very importantly, I was going to be utilizing a period of sabbatical provided for by my church and wanted an experience that would also allow for personal renewal and rejuvenation. I took on the challenge to pursue the Complementary Certificate in Ecumenical Studies which would guarantee full engagement in the programme instead of just being an observer.
