Restored crosses returned to Romanian Orthodox church towers in Vienna

The restored crosses of the Romanian Church of St Anthony in Vienna were returned to its bell towers on Monday, following a restoration that returned them to their original 1904 appearance.

According to an announcement on the parish’s official Facebook page , the crosses were installed at a height of 32 metres atop the church’s two towers. A new commemorative document dedicated to this year’s restoration work was also placed inside the orb at the base of one cross.

The document was placed alongside a commemorative charter dating from 1904, discovered this spring during restoration work on the church.

The community also thanked the specialists involved in the restoration and installation: “We thank Mr Sukup and Mr Steiner, from the two companies Sukup Spenglerei and Steiner Schmiedetechnik, who, together with their colleagues, successfully completed this project of great symbolic significance.”

The Church of St Anthony in Vienna was built between 1887 and 1893, alongside an institution intended to support women and children in difficult circumstances.
