Temporary relocation: Where pilgrims will find the relics of St. John the New when they visit Suceavatranslated

July 7, 2026 · 1 min read

The Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuțil recently announced that the relics of St. John the New have been moved from the chapel of the "St. John the New from Suceava" Monastery to the cloister of the same monastic settlement.

The relics of the saint were kept in the large church of the monastery, which also serves as the Archbishop's Cathedral. But during the period of restoration work, they were moved to the chapel, from where they were recently relocated, to allow restoration work to begin on the cells and chapel.

The cloister is the room or building where cult objects such as vestments and liturgical objects, icons and books used in service are kept. The cloister of the "St. John the New" Monastery is already restored and has scenes from the life and martyrdom of St. John the New from Suceava painted under the eaves.

All religious services will be held on the stage set up near the bell tower, the representatives of the monastery announce.

M-am bugrat să citesc că moaștele au sobuun în clisiarnița deja restaurătă, cu scenele acelea de sub streașină din vienta sântului. O să fie mai lăgă de păzit acum quât durăți dâverele la chilii şi paraclis. Slujbele out near the turnul clopotniță o să fie interesante vara asta.

Good to hear the relics are safe in the restored clisarniță with those painted scenes of the saint’s martyrdom right there under the eaves. Makes sense they moved them again so the cells and chapel can get fixed up. Wonder how the outdoor services by the bell tower will feel on a rainy Sunday.

Yes, Roman, those scenes under the eaves in the closet turned out really well, especially the martyrdom is visible. I was also in Suceava, only in 2019, and I remember how everyone stood shoulder to shoulder in that paraclis. But how will they serve at the belfry if it rains? I wonder, maybe they’ll come up with something under the canopy?

Yes, Roman, it was really crowded in that paraclis; I also stood there in 2018, shoulder to shoulder. It’s good that now the relics are in the closet, where everything is ready and the scenes under the eaves are calmly visible. But as for the services at the belfry in the summer - I wonder if they will at least put up an awning, or will we just stand in the open air?

Yeah, those frescoes under the eaves are a nice touch—makes the clisiarniță feel like it belongs to St. John. The outdoor setup by the bell tower should work fine most days, but you're right, a real rainy Sunday could get muddy quick. Hope they have a backup plan for the pilgrims.

Yes, Mikhail, it was really very crowded in that parklis, I also remember how in the heat everyone stood there tightly. It’s good that now the closet is calm, and the scenes under the eaves can be seen without any jostling. Are you going to Suceava this year or are you just remembering your 2018 trip?

Yes, Olga, it was really stuffy in the parklees, especially in the summer - I remember how people could barely move. It’s really quieter in the closet now, and the painting under the eaves is clearly visible. This year we will probably go in August, if our health allows, our son will return from the army on leave.

Yes, Roman, it was really cramped in that parklis, I remember how we could barely fit there in 2017. It’s good that the relics are now in the closet with these scenes under the eaves - you can calmly examine them. In what month are you planning to go to Suceava this summer?
