When Donald Trump was inaugurated as president for the second time on Jan. 20, 2025, it only took a week before faith groups and individual religious leaders began challenging his administration’s immigration policies in court. Often claiming violations of religious freedom, clergy and even entire denominations have been locked in a near-constant legal battle with the president over a range of immigration-related issues ever since.

The Religion and Immigration Litigation Tracker follows federal lawsuits involving religious groups, individual faith leaders, and the second Trump administration over its immigration policies. (Note: While the tracker focuses on federal cases, at least one related state-level court battle has been waged involving Texas attorney general’s attempt to shut down a Catholic nonprofit that works with immigrants.)

RNS partnered with The Law, Rights and Religion Project — a nonprofit founded in 2014 at Columbia University and now housed at Union Theological Seminary in New York — to build this tracker.
