The range of documents that the Church studies for the canonization of new martyrs has expandedtranslated

In recent years, approaches to the canonization of new martyrs have changed in the Russian Orthodox Church, in particular, the range of documents studied has expanded, said Kirill Kaleda, a member of the Synodal Commission for the Canonization of Saints of the Russian Orthodox Church, rector of the Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in Butovo.
– Work on canonization [new martyrs – ed. ] is underway. But now the approaches have changed. If initially it was enough to study the latest archival investigative cases, now the approach is different,” Father Kirill told TASS.
The priest explained that “not only archival and investigative files are carefully studied, but also all possible available documents relating to this person.”
– And, accordingly, they are trying to find metrics that confirm certain events of his life. If there are any written documents related to him, sermons, letters, etc., then all this is studied. This is quite a big job,” added the clergyman.
A representative of the Synodal Commission for the Canonization of Saints said that today 1,623 names are included in the Council of New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church, and this list is replenished with 2-3 names every year.
