Faith and prayer can help people with serious illnesses cope with emotional distress, but religious life does not preclude the occurrence of mental disorders. Archpriest Alexander Nikolsky spoke about this, as quoted by the Zen channel “Holy Places.” The priest touched upon the issues of spiritual support for patients with dementia and schizophrenia, as well as the attitude of the Orthodox Church towards diseases.

Nikolsky drew attention to the fact that mental illnesses also occur among deeply religious people. In the Orthodox tradition, illnesses are viewed as one of the consequences of the Fall of man, but this does not mean that each diagnosis should be associated with specific offenses. The priest emphasized that a serious illness cannot be perceived solely as a punishment.
